Happy New Year!

Colleagues,

On December 11, we were delighted to send out our first round of admission decisions for the autumn 2021 cycle. We said yes to more than 13,500 first-year students. We also sent our first round of notifications to students who were deferred or not offered admission to the Columbus campus.

In this first group, approximately 38% of admitted students asked for their test scores to not be considered. As is typical with this first release, students admitted tend to be some of our strongest students academically.

Our completed early action applications increased by roughly 15% and we are on target to release the remainder of our decisions by the end of January. We continue to be focused on students who are the most marginalized in this virtual environment to support their application and FAFSA completion process before the February 1 deadline.

In addition to sending admissions decisions, our first notifications for the Morrill Scholarship Program and our Honors and Scholars programs were sent in December, and those notifications will continue through March. Notification about university merit scholarships, for student who met the early action deadline and who qualify, will begin in mid-January and continue through the end of February.

Finally, Ohio State is still considering whether we will extend the one-year test optional policy for 2022; we hope to have an answer by February. We can share that our early action deadline for autumn 2022 applicants will be November 1.

Application deadlines

February 1, our final autumn 2021 regular decision application deadline, is fast approaching. As a reminder this is a completion deadline, so all materials need to be received by this date for students to be considered.

Take note of these important dates:

January 29: Final early action application decisions released
February 1: Regular decision application deadline
February 19: First regular decision application decisions released
March 26: Final regular decision application decisions released

Program updates

Alumni Scholarship Program

The Alumni Scholars Program application deadline is fast approaching! Please encourage your students — whether they are applicants or admitted — to submit the application by February 1, 2021. The scholarship program is intended to provide recognition and financial assistance to incoming freshmen.

Buckeye Student Leadership Academy

The Buckeye Student Leadership Academy is a special five-month program for rising Ohio high school seniors who are high achieving, first-generation, rural and/or underrepresented minority students. Through a series of workshops, participants learn more about themselves and others and how to make the college experience work for them. Please encourage your current juniors to apply by Monday, March 1, 2021. Applications to the BSLA are considered on a competitive basis.

Rise

Schmidt Futures, the foundation that challenged Ohio State to partner with community members to help bolster the middle class, has a new challenge for youth age 15-17: Rise. Rise finds extraordinary young people who need opportunity and supports them for life as they use their talents to serve others. Students should apply by January 29, 2021.

Academic program update

Department of Horticulture and Crop Science

The world of turfgrass science is the perfect science major for students who love plants and sports. Case in point: Ohio State senior Rachael Cline found the sustainable plant systems major with a specialization in turfgrass science the perfect path for her academic career. Rachael recently completed an internship with the Everton Football Club in Liverpool, England, an experience that combined her love for science with her desire to work outdoors in a professional sports atmosphere. When COVID-19 hit, Rachael was in England. She said, “I believe I developed more decision-making skills and developed more of a management mindset than I ever would have under a normal internship situation.” Read more about Rachael.
