Congrats to the Class of 2021!

Colleagues:

Earlier this month, Ohio State awarded degrees and certificates to 12,345 graduates at our spring commencement ceremony. For me, this is the best reminder of the importance of the work we do together each year to guide some of your talented students to discover Ohio State.

The students who have confirmed their enrollment to date comprise a terrific class that we are beyond excited to welcome.

Here's what we know about them so far:

65.6% are Ohio residents, 10% are international
17.6% identify as historically underrepresented students of color
21% are first-generation
15.6% were invited into Honors, 13% were invited to a Scholars program
64% rank in the top 10% of their class, 94% rank in the top 25%
47 of 50 U.S. states are represented, as are all 88 Ohio counties and 45 countries

Throughout this challenging year, our staff connected with many of you who were advocating for students or helping to resolve issues students encountered in the application process. This collaboration is the bedrock of our partnership. We thank you and celebrate with you on behalf of the members of the Class of 2021.

Test optional results

Many of you have asked about our applicant pool as it pertains to whether or not students elected to submit a test score.

Ohio residents account for only 37% of admitted students but for 65% of students who have paid the acceptance fee. Ohio residents also, more than other populations, asked for their ACT and SAT test scores to be considered as part of the application process. Resultantly, the percentage of admitted students who submitted test scores who also paid the acceptance fee is higher than might be expected.

Because of continued inconsistency in testing availability, Ohio State has extended the test optional pilot for students applying in autumn 2022. We’ll be providing additional guidance to students this summer on submitting scores for 2022.

Application updates

Students who were offered and accepted our offer of the waitlist will have a final decision by June 1. We know that this time of year is critical for students as they make their final decisions, and we will make every effort to get decisions out as quickly as we can.

Our annual final high school transcript request is coming to your inbox next week. This request is a reminder for you to send us final high school transcripts — showing graduation date — for those students attending an Ohio State campus this fall. If you’d like to get a jumpstart, visit hscounselors.osu.edu and request your portal log-in, if you don’t already have one.

Campus tours start again

Prospective students can once again visit our campus for a campus tour. Registration for the month of June will start May 24; July dates will open in early June. We are continuing to require masks be worn inside, and students can bring one guest. To register and view our visit guidelines, go to campusvisit.osu.edu.

Our virtual programming for prospective students will continue as we bring back in-person campus tours.

This is a common time of year for school counseling and advising staff to transition. Please take a moment to let us know of any retirements or new hires.

We're looking for seasonal application reviewers

Do you know a retired educator who would be a great fit for our seasonal application reviewer position? Seasonal reviewers support Undergraduate Admissions in the holistic review of new first-year student applications.

Extensive training and coaching is provided during our October through March application review season.
On average, our seasonal reviewers review 80 applications a week over 14-18 hours, with increases anticipated in November, December and January.
The job duties are performed remotely and reviewers must supply their own equipment (e.g., laptop, desktop, tablet, etc.).

This position is scheduled to post on the Ohio State job board in the middle of July. Please note: Due to potential conflicts of interest, this opportunity is not available for current school counselors, advisors or educators.

Academic program updates

John Glenn College of Public Affairs

The John Glenn College of Public Affairs is proud to announce the launch of Democracy Camp 2021. Built on the ideals of Senator John Glenn, Democracy Camp is perfect for rising high school juniors and seniors who want to become more involved in the democratic process.

This free virtual program includes three summer policy-intensive sessions and two optional workshops to help build a college application.
Participants will hear from elected officials, Ohio State faculty, activists and other community leaders as they learn how to be engaged citizens and future leaders in public service.

Applications are due on June 1 and sessions begin June 12.

College of Arts and Sciences

On the College of Arts and Sciences High School Counselor website, you can research the 80+ major and 100+ minor programs the college offers, learn about certificate programs, and discover more about learning communities and the PASS program.

Fisher College of Business

The Fisher College of Business will once again be offering virtual summer programming for high school students, including the Women in Business Summit and Business Bootcamp. Please share with any students interested in pursuing a career in business!
